The first three tracks one on my Start - Omega (5) - Gammapolis (Vinyl has some moments of greatness with soaring keyboards and spacey motives. For the most part this can not be LP) of the track as a whole. It is rather lacklustre and I find it even to be sort of substandard. That track is fantastic. Spacey, emotive and warm. I really dig that one. Apart from that the remaining tracks fall short.
They fail in capturing me. However, though the music flies over my head for the most part I must give them credit for creating something of their own. It is all very well played and performed but just like the fancy chocolate box bought on the cheap turns out to contain something else than high quality fillings, you feel sort of cheated on the whole thing.
Does that make sense? Stylistically this is rather a step back for the band, which returns to its Hard Rock roots, quite reasonable for a band, which revisits its older material. Compositionally though ''Omega III'' is a pretty strong album, even if the progressive flavors are limited.
As aforementioned, most of the tracks are straightforward Hard Rock with great guitar moves, edgy solos and lots of keyboard waves next to Kobor's great voice.
A few of them though really stand out. Accesible, consistent and solid Classic Rock with background Mellotrons and a fine combination of electric and acoustic textures. This is an album closer to the likes of Classic Rock than Progressive Rock fans. Even so, its high level of energy, consistent compositions and Benko's amazing voice are good reasons to give LP) a spin. Warmly recommended. Strangely, I've been familiar with these songs since my childhood in Hungary, largely due to the excellent live album "Elo Omega", but only in recent times I've heard the studio versions.
It's almost like hearing them with a set of fresh ears as the arrangements in the studio are richer, more rounded, partly due to the added lashes of sweeping mellotron work.
Surprisingly, it has become a win-win situation for both bands. This album heralds the beginning of their "Floydian" period, representing a virtually instant transformation. The tracks here appear as if Deep Purple meets Pink Floyd around to quite an enjoyable effect.
